Virginia
Virginia is an ongoing multimedia project and is an investigative exploration of the culture of silence among the women in my family tree, within both the Aruban and Dutch contexts. I research how silence has taken root across generations, and how it can be broken through awareness and the reopening of conversations.
Focusing on the women in my family line, their strength and their unspoken experiences, this opens important conversations; it strengthens bonds, and brings a shared sense of resilience.
The project is therefore an ode to the resilience of women, and to the generations who, consciously or unconsciously, have cleared paths for new ways of speaking and being.

Despite ongoing media attention and public debate, abortion remains surrounded by a deeply rooted taboo. This documentary focuses on the often invisible process of emotional recovery following an abortion. Rather than engaging with political discourse, this documentary centers on the inner experience of a young woman whose story is rarely given space to be heard.
The film offers an intimate perspective on feelings of shame, silence, and sometimes regret, and examines how these emotions are shaped by the prevailing image of “a woman who has had an abortion.” Through this documentary, I seek to question and reframe that image, and to show that women should not feel ashamed of an experience that is deeply personal and complex.
During the pregnancy of an eighteen year old girl, there was no “pink cloud,” but rather a dark one. The abortion marked a painful rupture, followed by a long and confronting process of healing that continues to affect her daily life. In this documentary, I travel with her through that tunnel of silence and shame, searching for openness, recognition, and the light at the end.
